Jose Villa Ochoa, also known as Don Joel, from Santa Ana, California. This 94-year-old is still working as a street vendor because he has no other choice.
That’s what 28-year-old Kenia Barragan found out when she took the time to sit an listen to his story.
It turns out that Jose only works at this tamale cart because no one would hire him due to his age; and he needs to work because even as is he can barely afford coffee and bread, let alone his medication.
So every day he is out on the street hustling, selling his tamales to anyone he can, which is significantly fewer people with much of California on lock-down.
When Kenia was done listening to his story, she decided to do something about it. She took to Instagram to share what she had learned and then asked if anyone wanted to help that they reach out to her.
To follow up Kenia put out a Facebook post a week later letting everyone know that they had raised over $84,000.00 for Jose. In a week! Amazing! In addition to the money raised she apparently also bought him a new wheelchair and a pair of shiny black shoes.
As for why Kenia helped him? “I felt for him, my parents are older and I would hate to see my dad out selling tamales for somebody and barely making ends meet,” Barragan said.
She continued – “I hope people take care of our community. We need to take care of each other. Even if you can’t give money — donate a prayer, give something back, take the time to get to know someone.”
Not only is this your Good News Story of the Day; find it in full with a video here, it is also a powerful message. Not everyone can give money. But we can all give SOMETHING. And we should; to care for each other.
