Young people and incredible ability to gather funds for the right cause with a simple act. But when it came to raising money for one of the greatest humanitarian causes happening right now, two young London lads were able to make big things happen, especially when they caught the attention of a big star.
Yemen is in the midst of a massive humanitarian crisis that only continues to deteriorate and has left many families close to breaking point. More than 20 million people are in need of urgent aid.
Two young boys, dubbed, The Lemonaid Boys, Ayaan & Mikaeel who are both 6, started up their lemonade stand along with their family and friends in their London neighbourhood to raise money for the situation by selling fresh squeezed lemonade at £2 a glass, that’s about 3.40 Canadian.
Their fundraising idea was born over the summer after their parents showed the boys videos of Yemen and they decided they wanted to help. “They have nothing, like, the things you need to survive. They have no water, food, oil. And we have all of those things and that’s why we help them,” Moosa said.
They have so far done a very good job of helping, they have raised over £60,000, which is over $100,000.00 to support the efforts to help the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. Part of that effort was thanks to the help of a well known humanitarian; Angelina Jolie, who was appointed a U.N. special envoy in 2012. A few weeks ago the actress, 45, made an “extremely generous” donation to the 6-year-old best friends’ lemonade stand after hearing about their sweet fundraiser.
“Thank you for what you and your friends are doing to help children in Yemen,” the Hollywood star wrote in a signed note to Ayaan Moosa and Mikaeel Ishaaq, both six. “I’m sorry I’m not able to buy a lemonade from you, but I’d still like to make a donation to your stand.”
The boys shared a sweet video on their joint Instagram account (LemonAid Boys on Instagram) to thank Angelina Jolie for the donation.
They said they would have a glass of lemonade ready for her next time she visits London. While no one who knows has commented on how large a donation she made, the fact is she is putting her money where her mouth is. And according to reports Angelina Jolie plans to meet the boys next time she is in the United Kingdom.
