From Payless, to Pay it Forward, one Arkansas family took advantage of a going out of business sale to do something good for the community. What started out as a trip to the mall to buy her kids some shoes turned out to become so much more. Carrie Jernigan says it all happened after her oldest daughter saw a pair of Avengers shoes that a classmate would like. “She has the biggest heart, and she said ‘There is a boy in my class that loves avengers, and his shoes are too small, could you buy him these?,’ and I was like ‘of course,'” Jernigan said. “As I was checking out I just said ‘how much for the rest of the shoes in the store,’ almost joking and I could see the clerks, her face, her wheels start to turn and she finished checking me out. She said ‘can I have your number?'” she said. Later that day she got a call from the district manager approving the purchase, but then as she was in the store picking up the shoes they received another shipment, and in the end they were working out how to get some 1,500 shoes home.
This act has spiraled into a community organizing to help out kids in need, as families have contacted them to donate, so much so that they have decided to hold a back to school bash before classes resume in the area which will see them partner with Kibler Baptist Church and they will also be giving away school supplies. Such a truly wonderful way to get struggling families back to school by gifting the children all they could need for their education. Read more about it in your Good News Story of the Day here.
But the best part of this story comes from a wonderful lesson from parent to child – “I always tell my kids, if you ask them what they want to be when they grow up they say be kind, and so I don’t care what they do in life as long as they are kind and good people,” Jernigan said. “And so it just reiterates to me that their hearts are in the right place and if it’s in the right place they can do amazing things.”
