It’s a story on Facebook that has spread enough that it has made it to your Good News Story of the Day. Jamario Howard was out for dinner with friends JaMychol Baker and Tae Knight when he noticed an older woman dining by herself at Brad’s Bar-B-Que in Oxford, Alabama. It’s a familiar moment for many of us who have seen a person dining alone and wondered what brought them there. Jamario Howard decided he wasn’t just going to wonder: “My exact thought was, ‘Dang I’d hate to have to eat alone,’” Howard wrote on Facebook Thursday. “So after thinking about it a minute, I walked over to her and asked if I could sit with her.”
Her answer was yes. She also introduced herself as Eleanor, a self described “older woman” who was there for a dinner out in honour of her 60th anniversary. Eleanor is a widow and the following day was to have been her anniversary, and though she had plenty of family they all lived out of town, meaning Eleanor was going to be alone. So she decided to go out; though if you ask her there might have been another influence. “I think it was a God thing. I think God sent me there,” she said. And certainly, if Eleanor’s right that God played any role in this, it may be to remind us of the joy that awaits just outside the bubbles we live in.
Mr. Howard has been applauded by the internet for his act of kindness in ensuring Eleanor didn’t have to eat alone that night, but he said he has a reason. “I used to say when I was younger, and I still say today, I want to change the world somehow,” said Jamario. “And I don’t know how. I’m not rich. I’m not famous. And I’m not very smart either, so I can’t be president. But we can show the world it’s alright to be kind, and then, before long, maybe the world will be a much better place.”
Jamario Howard may think he is not very smart, but his statement shows incredible wisdom and grace. Be sure to find out more about their encounter in your Good News Story of the Day available here.
