It began with a story back in November, which was previously one our Good News Stories of the Day, but the idea caught on and became a bit of a trend that has continued through the Christmas season and hundreds of people have had their layaway items paid off by those who have the money to afford to do so. This gestures of kindness and sharing, has included many, from individuals to entire communities coming together. Some have tried to follow the original idea and make their efforts unknown, which did not always work, such as Tyler Perry being found for spending over $430,000.00 to pay off layaway items. He had intended to remain anonymous; but was found out despite his wishes.
Others, on the other hand have made some effort to be known for their magnanimous deed, such as Kid Rock who left a Christmas card with every item he paid off. While this is also still kind, it is slightly self serving, and goes against Matthew 6:1 – “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.” It is especially problematic if you are a politician and use donated money for the act and then attach your name to it in the effort of gaining positive PR. That is actively trying to benefit off a charitable act.
That brings us back to the latest story, this out of New Jersey, where it has been done again; but right, this time. An individual has once again paid off all of the layaway items at a local store and they requested to remain anonymous. The store will not even disclose how much they spent to make this Christmas gift happen. But the families who have had their years turned around in a positive way have been expressing their grateful joy nonetheless and you can read all about that in your Good News Story of the Day here.
