Anthony Mmesoma Madu, an 11-year-old boy from Nigeria, is getting the opportunity of a lifetime. All it took was a video of him dancing outside in the rain going viral to potentially change his life. That’s because the dancing he was doing was an impressive ballet routine, done barefoot in the pouring rain.
It caught the attention of many around the world, including Cynthia Harvey, artistic director of the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of Dance in New York. She was sent the video by a friend from the UK, and almost immediately tried to find out who this young dancer was.
The reason? She wanted to extend a full schcolarship for the ABT Virtual, Young Dancer Summer Workshop, a 3 week intensive program on dance. That’s a full scholarship to a camp at one of the United States most distinguished ballet schools.
Cynthia also wanted to help Anthony’s instructor; a Daniel Ajala Owoseni, of Leap Dance Academy. A dance school in Lagos, Daniel founded three years ago, with only 12 students.
Arrangements are being made for Daniel to be included in ABT’s National Training Curriculum; which is a course that helps instructors brush up on their skills.
All of this from one online video. That’s your Good News Story of the Day which you can find in full here. As for Anthony? He is very, very happy that his video has gone viral and hopes that if anything it challenges the stereotype that male dancers still face.
“When people see ballet they think it is only for girls,” he said. “How I want them to see me is when I am dancing, they know that there is a male ballet dancer.” He added: “The feeling that comes over me is as if I am dreaming.”
