Man Makes Own Gym In Forest – GNSOTD Monday Aug 12th 2019

There are many who get memberships at gyms or live in buildings with fitness facilities and never use them, there’s others who never seem to leave, but there is at least one man who did everything he could to get a workout. The trouble is it is hard to get the equipment when you have no money and no home to put it in. Still Shane Knight, 39, of Surrey, British Columbia, found a way to make it work.

Shane Knight doesn’t have a fixed address and he’s a health nut who wears heavy chains around his neck when he does dips and carries protein powder with him in a Ziploc bag. So he did what he needed to do and built himself a gym in a forest near Sanctuary City, a tent encampment where he lives, in a wooded area off Johnston Hill near the Pattullo Bridge in Surrey with about 15 other people.

So far the gym consists of a pull down machine that looks like a wooden version of a Bowflex or Total Gym and a bench press bar made out of a slender piece of wood and discarded tire rims. Shane said finding parts for the pull down machine was difficult. “Every day of the month for two months, eight hours a day, I did nothing but go and look for parts and stash them somewhere,” he said. “I cut them with my little dollar store handsaw.” He says he found the materials in junk piles and spent hours cutting, sanding and crafting them into a gym. “It was the hardest thing I ever did,” he said. “It almost broke me, man. But I did it.”

He was a man who had a desire for something and found the will to make it happen. it wasn’t easy, but he did it. And his efforts not only help himself but others in his community. Wanda Stopa, who lives at the camp with Knight, says everyone loves the workout station. Knight says he built the workout centre so that he could help other people at the camp get in shape. “I made friends really fast,” he said. “I think maybe I could motivate some of these guys to start working out.”

You never know what you can accomplish until you push through the hardest things you’ve ever done. Find Shane’s story in your Good News Story of the Day here.
