There is one group of people who tend to get overlooked during most holidays, senior citizens who have little or no family left, and those whose family cannot visit them at this time because they care enough to want them to stay alive and safe.
But there are those who make it their mission to care for these elders who have years left to live and deserve the same care and attention as the rest of us. One incredible organization in the United States is looking to make Valentine’s Day especially special for them.
They’re called the Cupid Crew, a group of volunteers organized by Wish of a Lifetime from AARP. The Cupid Crew usually delivers roses and sweet notes in person to senior citizens around Valentine’s Day, but this year, as the pandemic dictates, in person visits are not a good idea; so instead they are taking the time to make and send heartfelt cards.
Laura Larson and her family have been a part of the Cupid Crew since 2016, visiting senior communities every Valentine’s Day to carry out the group’s mission of spreading love and kindness. “I feel it every time we walk into one of those senior living facilities,” Larson said. “It’s so evident to me how much just a few minutes of my time makes a difference to them.”
Connection is so important during these COVID-19 times, and so much more for the seniors who cannot even go out to the grocery store for the chance to see people, or go for a drive to get out of their rooms.
This group is filling that need in splendid fashion, and are certainly worthy of being your Good News Story of the Day, which you can read more about here.
But what makes this story even better is that the group is getting their own surprise this year; Mr. Peanut planned something special for them. Yes, Planter’s the peanut company decided to join TODAY to recognize moments of kindness, and so Larson was surprised with Valentine’s Day gifts, including flowers, chocolates and balloons. In her honor, every single resident of RiverPointe Senior Living of Littleton, Colorado, will be receiving special Valentine’s Day gifts to make this year a little sweeter.
That’s not all either. To top it off, Planters is also donating $20,000 to Wish of a Lifetime from AARP to help continue the Cupid Crew’s mission.
It’s wonderful that there are groups who are taking the time to remember seniors this Valentine’s day, but there is more than can be done. If you have a bit of time, and can find a few cards to send, consider getting in touch with a local Senior’s facility and arranging a drop off of cards for them to deliver to those who would appreciate it more than you know. It is a mission worth pursuing.
