Free Anishinaabemowin Niwasa Language App Now Available

There is now a free app to help teach the Anishinaabemowin Niwasa language that you can get for what ever your device might be. It was released by Niwasa Kendaaswin Teg, a not for profit charitable Indigenous organization which serves the Indigenous and non-Indigenous population in Hamilton, Brantford and surrounding areas. They put their mission as providing services and supports in safe spaces for Indigenous people across the life cycle that are rooted in culture and language. In this case; it is the language that is being featured.

Their launch of this Anishinaabemowin language app is in the hope that it will reconnect people with the language and improve access to learning. They already offered language classes but wanted to take it one step further and bring it to more first time learners. Now anyone with a smart device can begin to learn the language with the help of an app which contains over 500+ phrases/words recorded audio files and the following:

  • 3 levels of games
  • 3 types of quizzes
  • A Culture Notes section which includes videos, songs, and images
  • A searchable database, and much more.

It’s also important to note that everyone pictured in the app is from the Niwasa community, including youth, parents, teachers and elders. If you would like to know more about the app you can find out about it on the Niwasa Kendaaswin Ted website, or find it on the App Store or Play Store.
