Michael Esmond of Gulf Breeze, Florida, had fallen behind in his bills in the 1980’s, and had his power cut off. That is how he found that he could relate to those who would soon be facing the same in his community of some 6,000 residents. “I actually lived that back in the 1980s,” he said. “I experienced the same thing, having trouble paying bills. My gas was shut off, and we had no heating for the whole winter.” He continued, “It was one of the coldest winters in Florida; temperature got down to the single digit. That was definitely in my mind when I received the bill this year.” Which is why this year he decided to do something brilliantly kind.
You see, Esmond is much better off than he was over 30 years ago, he is now owner of Gulf Breeze Pools & Spa near Pensacola, Florida. So he contacted his utility company found out who was in real trouble, and then he paid 36 families’ bills ahead of Christmas. “It made me cry. It made me cry,” Joanne Oliver, Gulf Breeze’s utility billing supervisor, told CNN affiliate WEAR. “For someone like him, a veteran to come in and do some grand gesture. It was heartfelt for me.”
Imagine being on the brink of having your power disconnected in the middle of winter, and instead of reading a bill you got a card saying – “It is our honor and privilege to inform you that your past due utility bill has been paid by Gulf Breeze Pools & Spas. You can rest easier this holiday season knowing you have one less bill to pay. On behalf of Gulf Breeze Pools & Spas we here at the City of Gulf Breeze would like to wish you and your family a happy holiday season.” That is the feeling these families received as a Christmas gift this year thanks to a man whose fortunes have changed over the years.
