When your father texts you “Please call me as soon as you get this, it’s an emergency.” You might think something horrible had happened; but in this case it might be the cutest emergency ever. While Dan Veerman’s daughter Steph was off at college, he was put in charge of her hamster Chester. Steph explained that her father “ended up getting really attached” to Chester while she was away. That became evident when Chester went missing, sending Dan into a panic. He began texting her his apologies and declaring he would look for him all day.
Apparently Chester had escaped his cage and was hiding in the home. Dan offered to skip work to keep the search up, Steph told her father that wouldn’t be necessary, texting him, “Dad- he’s just a hamster, I don’t blame you AT ALL. You shouldn’t skip work. You are a lawyer and he is a hamster.” She knew her father was panicking and tried to keep him calm. Still, Dan continued searching, even setting up traps with flour so he could track Chester’s footprints. In the end? Dan put his trust in God, which can be seen in the exchange on Steph’s Twitter feed here.

The good news is that Dan did eventually find Chester! But it wasn’t any of his ingenious traps or tracking down the little furry friend. No, it was patience that won the day and food, eventually Chester was found back in his cage. Dan joked that his search for the hamster was “the most stressful day in my life since [he] took the bar exam.” His heroic search for Chester earned him a lot of love online. The exchange earned over 114,000 retweets and 452,000 likes from Twitter users who fell in love with Dan’s panicked search for his daughter’s hamster.
It’s a story about the dedication of a father trying to right a wrong with his daughter, the rewards of trusting in God, it’s a roller-coaster ride of emotions; it’s your Good News Story of the Day and you can find it here. Also, Steph tweeted photographs of Chester after the drama had subsided, writing, “For all asking, this is Chester!! He’s the light of my life and not ‘just a hamster,’ however, my dad was having a panic attack so I tried to calm him down by saying that!!” She’s a good egg.
