As a driver for UPS, Carolyn Crump is used to being the one delivering things, but on Friday, she was the one receiving after dozens of her grateful customers banded together to give her a special gift.
Caryolyn has been working for UPS for 23 years and has been on the same route for the last 6 which takes her just outside of St. Louis to a place called Clayton in Missouri. She is beloved on that route for a few very good reasons.
“We all have her cell phone number. She’s on top of it, and if it’s raining, she’s wrapping it in plastic,” customer Jason Lehtman said.
“Every single person can give you a story where [Crump has] gone above and beyond, like bringing up groceries when someone’s arm was broken,” he added. “She’s got a heart of gold. The day before we had to put our dog down, I found her in our foyer saying her goodbyes to our dog. That’s the type of person she is.”
Carolyn says it is just her being positive. “It’s easy to have a positive attitude when you know how blessed you are to just have a job, especially during a pandemic,” she told the outlet. “I love online shoppers. I should get a bumper sticker that says that on my car. They don’t sign my check, but they definitely supply the materials for it.”
That positivity has come back to her in an unexpected way after a conversation with one of those customers. She was talking to Jason Lehtman about how her 30 year old roof was in need of replacing and leaking and Jason, who works in roofing, quickly put together an estimate and began fundraising.
Jason opened up a GoFundMe and within two days it had raised several thousand dollars from those who knew and appreciated her as well as others who just wanted to support a good person. The whole project was ready to present to Carolyn in less than two weeks.
That is how Carolyn found herself on the way to a package pickup which turned out to be a set-up by her company! When she arrived she was blindfolded by friends and brought to a local park where more than 50 people were waiting to celebrate her and present her with the funds and the plans for a new roof.
“I am truly surprised,” she told Fox affiliate KTVI. “I love this route. I love my job. I love coming to work, I never mind working. It’s great, and this is why.” That’s what she said before handing the big cheque off to her daughter and hopping back in her truck to deliver her final 20 packages of the day. The initial goal to cover Crump’s roof was covered by the fundraiser, so all extra money will reportedly go to helping her with bills and Christmas. She is an example of how you can change the world around you just by being an inspiration for others. “She’s just kind. She’s humble,” customer Christie Pickrell told KTVI. “I don’t think she even realizes the impact she has on people. She’s always smiling.”
A smile can be all it takes.
