Over 150,000 water bottles made by Contigo, a popular water bottle manufacturer, have been recalled in Canada due to fears that they could present a choking hazard for children. Contigo Kids Cleanable water bottles are the ones affected by the recall as the company says that the silicon mouthpiece can become detached during use, and could lead to choking if swallowed. So far no injuries have been reported according to Health Canada, though there have been dozens of reports of the spout detaching in Canada and nearly 150 reported incidents in the US.
According to the company it is out of an abundance of caution that they are recalling the water bottle lids. Also, only water bottles with a black colour spout base and black colour spout cover are included in this recall. Contigo is printed on the rim and along the front near the bottom of the bottle. The water bottles come in three sizes (13 ounce, 14 ounce and 20 ounce) and four bottle colors (solid color, graphics, stainless steel and stainless steel solid colors). The water bottles were sold individually as well as in two-packs and three-packs. There were approximately 5.7 million of the Cleanable water bottles sold in the U.S., 157,000 sold in Canada and around 29,000 sold in Mexico. All are under this recall.
If you believe you have one of these lids Health Canada advises that you should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles, take them away from children and contact Contigo for inspection instructions and a free replacement lid.
