When Lloyd Black arrived for the first time at Anytime Fitness in Semmes, Alabama, he inspired a few surprised glances. Firstly, he was 90-years-old. Secondly, he showed up in coveralls to join the gym. It turns out he’d been struggling to complete his household tasks and thought exercise might help him build strength and reduce his aches and pains.
That would begin a journey that would become an inspiration for everyone in his gym and beyond. Something he never intended to do. Now 91, Lloyd has seen success in his workout routine. When he started he would become winded within 10 minutes on a treadmill; now he can easily walk over half an hour. He has also added weightlifting to his routine to strengthen his arms and legs. And his dedication has been noticed; “He’s been showing so much progress and over the past year he’s been coming faithfully three times a week or if not more like every other day,” said Ashley Seaman, general manager of Anytime Fitness in Semmes.
She was so impressed with his dedication she nominated him for their member of the month award, which he received, in January. Now the coverall wearing nonagenarian is a well known figure around the gym and his story has gone viral. As to why he wears coveralls to work out? “The reason I wear them is very simple: I don’t have much hips,” Black, a retired principal joked. “If I get too active, I have trouble keeping my pants up.”
And so this elder statesman of the gym goes about helping other seniors with the equipment and building up his own fitness, and being an inspiration and the focus of your Good News Story of the Day, find it in full here. And while he never intended to inspire those who come to his gym Black said “If it helps others, I’m glad to do it.” We’re glad he does it too.
Be comfortable in what you do, be helpful, be dedicated; and maybe you’ll find yourself an inspiration to others without even intending to, just like Lloyd Black.
